What anti-tarnish jewellery is

Tarnish is the dull, darkened film that forms on many metals as they meet air, sweat and moisture. Anti-tarnish jewellery is made to resist it, so the pieces you wear every day keep their colour and shine with ordinary care. You will also see it called tarnish-free jewellery or stainless steel jewellery.

At Upakarna it starts with the base metal. Our gold-tone pieces are 316L stainless steel with 18K gold plating. Rose gold pieces are 316L stainless steel with 18K rose gold plating, and silver-tone pieces are 316L stainless steel. 316L is a low-carbon grade of stainless steel, widely used for watches and for jewellery that sits against skin all day. Our pieces are lab-tested and skin-safe, with a water-resistant design.

Is it real gold?

No. It is 18K gold plating over 316L stainless steel, not solid gold. That is what keeps it priced for everyday wear rather than for the locker, and it is why you can wear it to the office, to college and on a rainy commute without a second thought.

How to choose anti-tarnish jewellery

Start with the finish. Gold tone sits well with most Indian wear, from a cotton kurta to an office shirt. Rose gold reads softer and warmer, and silver tone is the cool, minimal option. You can mix all three; keep one finish as the base and let the others accent it.

Then think about fit. Openable and adjustable bangles go on without squeezing over your hand, and adjustable rings and chains are the safest choice when you are buying for someone else. Check the size guide before you order a closed bangle.

Finally, think about how you will stack. One statement piece, one plain or textured piece and one personal piece, such as an initial, make a balanced stack. Three to five pieces on one wrist is plenty for every day, and our ready-made stacks and sets are put together to match if you would rather not plan it yourself.

Care and water

Our pieces have a water-resistant design, so rain and monsoon days are fine. Take them off for showers, baths and swimming. Put perfume, lotion and sanitiser on before your jewellery and let them dry first.

After a wet commute or a long day, wipe each piece with a soft, dry cloth and store it dry, in its pouch or box, away from other pieces so the plating does not scratch. That small routine is all the care anti-tarnish jewellery asks for.

Anti-tarnish jewellery as a gift

Anti-tarnish pieces are easy to give because they can be worn from the first day, with no special care routine to explain. Add an initial for something personal, choose adjustable sizes if you are unsure, and add a gift box in the cart for ₹ 150.

Which is the best anti-tarnish jewellery?
